On Food III: The Grill.

It’s gotten warm in the last couple weeks or so, and as soon as the temperature gets up to the level of not-freezing, the smell of charcoal and burning meat fills the air. It’s one of the ways to know it’s spring. Close your eyes. Inhale through your nose. Do you smell burning leaves? Autumn. Do you smell burning skin? Summertime. Do you smell burning meat? Springtime.

But why is grilling such an intrinsically male thing? Why is the only kind of cooking that men can do such a stereotypically neanderthal activity? Grog no like cold meat. Grog make burning thing. Grog cook hunk of mammoth on hot thing. Grog like hot meat more. Hot meat not make Grog sick. Grog in mood to bonk women on head, drag back to cave! Ah-oooooo. (That’s Grog’s war cry.) (more…)
